This the shit I don’t like. I just saw this on one of my fb friend’s page. I know it’s all about football and all, but the redskins need to change their name. Not only is the name offensive. This picture is incredibly offensive to Native american people! This is offensive to me! This is white supremacy in america people.

Vomit.

For the legions of people insisting that having a team with a name like Redskins isn’t racist, that it’s not meant to be racist or that it’s somehow honouring indigenous people…

Well, this is the kind of shit that happens.  Homeboy up there isn’t displaying an effigy of a football helmet-clad athlete.  It’s an effigy of a man wearing a widely appropriated symbol of North American indigineity. 

For those people who do not see anything wrong with the Native mascot, I would ask them if they honestly believe that this image, this horrific image, can be divorced from the racism that Native people experience? (of course it can, they would say.  There’s nothing racist about this because white people have solved racism.  Ad etcetera, ad nauseum)

Because I don’t think there is much of a difference.  I think it’s all part of that grand old game of colonialism.  The enterprise of imperialism.  For me, being who I am and despite the limits of my knowledge, it’s completely and totally obvious that the shit sandwich we’re served as Native people is seasoned with absolutely every iniquity produced by the mechanisms of white supremacy and settler-colonialism.

Which is to say; 

The attitudes, the prevailing worldview, that failed to prevent homeboy from stringing up an effigy of a Native man comes from the same plae that justifies our denigration, our poverty, our neglect, our abuse and our indignity.

I choose the word justify carefully, because they haven’t simply allowed these things to happen to us.  Settlers in their grand old game have not simply elided their responsibility for these things, either.  They all know, on an intellectual level, what they did.  Or they suspect it, at least, though the web of lies that is nationalist mythology tends to get things tangled.

What they’re all doing, what homeboy here has done, has taken all of these things, this legacypain and blood, and they have determined that it is an inevitability.  That it was meant to be this way.  

That we, the savages, the conniving halfbreeds and the inscrutable wildmen of their “new world” stood athwart their progress and therefore deserve it.

So don’t fucking anyone be telling me that I have bigger fish to fry.  I have one ten-ton monster to fry, and you’ better believe my fileting knife is razor sharp.

This is what it comes down to, for you people isn’t it? Fun. Your sacred right to have a gay old time and fuck anyone who has a problem with it, right? 

Only if you were to actually go out and act on your obviously deeply internalized racism would you be able to underline just what a sorry piece of shit you are.  You can see people reacting to this horrifically violent image and the great weight of genocide an oppression that accompanies it, and all you can do is lament the restrictions placed on fun.

I could trot out the scholarship, the heartfelt speeches and the dedicated work by people who are determined to take your fucking toys away, but I won’t bother.  It would be lost on you, wouldn’t it?  Not only are you a piece of shit, I suspect you’re also an arrogant moron.  Nothing would convince you so I’ll leave you secure in your certitude that we’re all just “butthurt”

Now, I know you fancy yourself a real hardass in contrast to all of us over-sensitive types who are just down on your fucking good time, but all I see is some dipshit fuckhead whining about a perceived inability to behave like an ignorant bigot in public without repercussion.
