white people: Hmm… I’m not comfortable with the way you look. What are you?
me: Native American and White.
white people: you aren’t Native American! You don’t have copper skin or straight, black hair.
me: if you say so…
white people: omg Johnny Depp is Native American now! He looks so hot in the Lone Ranger!
me: Johnny Depp is not Native American.
white people: WTF is your problem? Telling people who they are, jeez. That’s racist.

what is your crime?
Racist stereotyping, benefiting from the discrimination of Native American actors, benefiting from the oppression of Native Americans, and Cultural Appropriation.

HOW ARE PEOPLE GOING TO GET MAD AT JOHNNY DEPP FOR PLAYING A NATIVE AMERICAN IN THE LONE RANGER
YOU’RE KIDDING RIGHT
HE IS NATIVE AMERICAN
He could be full blooded and we’d still be mad about that obnoxious hot mess he’s portraying. Its not just the fact that he fabricated some blood myth. Its the fact that his portrayal is stereotypical and disrespectful and completly thoughtless.
to: OP: We are mad because we are being discriminated against. Johnny Depp said he “might” have some Native blood. That doesn’t make him Native American. Native American actors were overlooked, ignored, discriminated against. We have every right to be angry about being discriminated against. The movie also portrayed a racist stereotype (that was completely inaccurate). We have a right to be angry when we are stereotyped.
If people can’t get over Johnny Depp portraying a native american in an offensive way in The Lone Ranger then how do these same people enjoy any story? Pretty much any piece of fiction is rife with inaccuracies and factual errors that may be racist, dehumanizing, etc.
But really, it’s a movie. If…
We can be mad about it because our people are being discriminated against. There are plenty of Native American actors who could have played the part. Not only are we being discriminated against but stereotyped. So yeah, I think being angry is justified.
Decolonize the Wannabe Comanche: Tonto*
The Problem with Tonto: “bringing back a huge colonial legacy of misrepresentation…that relegates Indigenous People to a ‘vanished race’…"
And guess what? Redface is (still) inappropriate and colonial.
*it had to be done. obv.
I don't know why they needed to hire Depp to play Tonto. They literally could have got and random Native American dude to do it. I saw the trailer, he speaks like three words at a time in pigeon English. How much acting rang does it take to say "me Tonto".

Seriously. There are thousands of Native people who could have played the part. It is not fair to give PoC roles to white people; this happens way too often in Media.
