i am trying to find state statistics (in the U.S.) on who is being suspended and expelled. It’s September and three of our students were expelled already. How does a third grader get expelled? I’m a child development minor and I keep waiting for a class that talks about institutional racism, so far none have. (I have taken over 30 units on child development and education)
Alright native tumblr community I am asking for your help.
This pass few weeks I have been harassed, humiliated, and dehumanized by this group. They claim to be “celebrating native culture”. And how do they do that? By doing redface, and mocking our traditions and cultures. (As seen in the first photo; Some of these children are not of native decent and are participating in redface.)
One of the girls in this group is part of a school group I belonged to and would post these triggering pictures of redface on face book. I calmly told her and the parents of these children that what they are doing is offensive and hurtful to natives. The pictures the posted caused me to break down and begin sobbing and shaking. Instead of listening, I was attacked by both parents and children, the parents saying things like “I have no idea what I’m talking about and have no right to talk about it.” Which is funny, because in Pawnee and their all white.
The school group I belonged to have said many racist/sexist things in the past but I let them slide by for the sake of having friends. But I could not sit Idly by and watch them appropriate and disrespect my culture.
When I tried to attend one of the events of this school group after calling them out, I was humiliated. All of the parents had told their children not to speak to me or be around me. I would walk up to people to say hi and they would walk away. One girl told me I was not wanted there.
No one in this group will listen to me, and they continue to disrespect native cultures. One of them gave my mother a card for their group to “talk to the the people in charge if your so upset, but they won’t listen to you.”
So If you are a fellow native or ally and feel moved to call this group please do. I have posted their card with their number and email. I blanked out the name on the card for legal reasons.
Please call them or email them telling them that what they are doing is offensive and appropriation, and tell them what tribe you are from and why it is offensive to your tribe.
