I have a question. DX Is it true that 1 in 3 Native women will be raped in her lifetime? I just saw a post about it pop up on my dash (this post specifically whyihatewhitepeople(.)tumblr(.)com/post/62772161487/original-photos-are-not-mine-i-just-added-the) and I've never heard that before. I'm very disturbed. :(

yes it is true; 1 in 3 Native women will be raped at least once in their lifetime. And I have seen two differing material stating that 75-85% of those rapes will be committed by non-Natives. Very disturbing. Also, keep in mind that many rapes are unreported.

Did you know Native women are raped at rates 3 times that of any other ethnicity in the United States? And by primarily non-Native assailants?
This is not a Native issue, this is dominant society’s issue. Educate yourself.

I only read part of this but I am responding anyways. The fetishizing photo you posted does not create a rapist. However, images of Native women and/or non-Native women dressed in stereotyped Native American costumes in a sexual manner does make us targets. That doesn’t mean everyone who sees those images will rape Native women, but those photos are telling rapists that Native women are subhuman fantasies.

This message bothers me. Of course I know about Native women getting raped before hipster photography. My grandmother was raped, her mother was raped, her daughter was raped, and I don’t know many Native women (in person) who have not been raped. Rape is so prevalent that I was taught what to do WHEN I get raped (not if but when). I never claimed that the rapes of Native women is a new thing. This message is an attempt to silence me from speaking out against fetishizing images.

Cop Sexually Assaults Woman Then Arresting Her For Protesting
As if that wasn’t enough for them, they sent her child to protective services and put the mother in jail for “making false allegations against a police officer”, which is actually not a crime. Now that it’s been revealed she was telling the truth, not only is the cop fired, but even the judge who sat there and let it happen is under investigation.

I almost never reblog stuff of this nature for reasons, and I admit I couldn’t make it through this video all the way. But watching a woman get arrested for reporting a sexual assault in a courtroom, in front of a judge who’s playing with her two year old daughter while she screams, “why are you doing this to me?” is seriously the worst thing I have ever had the misfortune to witness.
