There are so many native people in my Facebook saying anti-black racist things in regards to the ferguson protests. They are saying the black people protesting are proving they are ghetto, that Americans are tired of their shit, that Mike Brown’s murder was justified, and that they support Darren Wilson. Almost all of these people saying this are dark skinned native peoples or not white passing native peoples. This is terrifying. Anti-blackness is prevalent in native communities. I keep seeing posts about native peoples being in solidarity with Ferguson, but are we?

 BD Wong.

Can we talk about this man for a second? Like how he’s been silently slaying for years. Many of you know him from Law and Order SVU as the psychiatrist (personally episodes that were centered around him were my favorite) , but he was also on the popular show “OZ”, and he was the voice of Shang in both “Mulan”  and “Mulan 2”. He’s a queer person of color and is in a loving relationship with his long term partner Richie Jackson since 1998. Like this man is amazing.

Always up for Wong…

Leech Lake Reservation, Minnesota

“A Native American Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe youth tends to a rice crop on the Leech Lake Reservation in Minnesota on Aug. 27, 2012. This tribe relies on water to preserve their culture, agriculture and overall quality of life.”

“The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Federal Recognized Tribes Extension Program (FRTEP) is an outreach effort to homeowners to educate them on the importance of how having the sanitation department pump their septic systems could protect the health and contribute to the safety of the environment and their community. USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) administers FRTEP, which provides funding for Extension programs on federally recognized reservations.” - USDA

There are thousands more than thousands of POC on tumblr

Many of them struggle with  mental disorders and illnesses that go misdiagnosed, unnoticed, or ignored simply due to the fact that a stigma is attached to them. They are not allowed to be or feel like they have a problem or disease or disorder or illness because they are fully functioning and the only ones who seem to have vulnerable sides are the white kids that they always see on tv

A lot of them don’t know who to talk to or if anyone will empathize with them at all but that’s why it’s important that a group of POC with disorders/illnesses are able to identify with them and help them cope and hopefully lead them into a better part of their life

It can be hard living as a POC, it can be even harder living as a queer POC, it can be even HARDER living as a trans-POC, but what if you lived a life of all those combined plus had a mental disorder or illness

PLEASE HELP SPREAD THE WORD SO THAT WE CAN REACH OUT TO OTHER POC LIKE OURSELVES AND MAKE THEM FEEL SAFE AND SECURE AT ALL TIMES

Here’s the link to our blog: http://imastrugglingpoc.tumblr.com/ PLEASE FOLLOW IF YOU ARE A POC STRUGGLING WITH THE HEAT OF A MENTAL DISORDER OR ILLNESS

Meet Ty of the Urban League Harvest Garden in Portland!

(Yes, there are black people in Portland. In fact, this sister whom I was lucky enough to meet, is making that known with her amazing photography project: The Black Portlanders.)

Ty’s work, on the other hand, is making black folks in Portland’s food movement more visible and connected. “The food movement in Portland is strong,” says Ty, “but we saw an absence of people of color. So we [the Urban League] started the Urban League Harvest Garden three years ago to show that we’re here. We are getting more people involved and creating a space for people of color in the movement to find each other.”

I had a great time meeting many folks in the POC food movement of Portland at Ty’s garden party and at the Roots Festival where Kalimah and Intisar were displaying portraits from The Black Portlanders.

Cultural appropriation often perpetuates inaccurate stereotypes about People of Color - what most white people think they know about Native Americans often comes from inaccurate stereotypes of a monolithic culture involving teepees, sweat lodges, and dream catchers. When these inaccurate stereotypes are perpetuated, they create a mold that white people demand People of Color fit into. When People of Color don’t fit those stereotypes, they are often ridiculed, attacked, dismissed, and marginalized for not fitting into a white person’s inaccurate idea of what it means to be a Person of Color.

Fucking important (via inertialinclination)

(via cultureisnotacostume-deactivate)

My English is not perfect and perhaps I am misinterpreting an expression, but I see a lot of white people say things like “i like all people no matter what their skin color is”.
.

And I cannot help but feel like comments including “no matter what” infers a negative hurdle that one must overcome to accept people of color.

Do they mean: “I like all people for everything that they are” or “I like all people despite their skin color?”; because the later phrase I find problematic.

Aggression issues like these people are displaying are exactly part of why PoC are killed so commonly. That's so fucked up.

Answer

Exactly. Because people like him (mrfantasm) believe that people of color are subhuman and should be silenced; and should feel nothing but grateful when white people misuse our sacred cultural items. That we should be ecstatic that he, a white man, would notice are “pitiful” cultures at all… He attempted to exert his white privilege over me by trying to silence me and telling me that everyone has a right to steal anything they want from us. When a race(s) are seen as something subhuman violence and oppression towards those groups are inevitable.
