Indiana’s population has become increasingly diverse in terms of race and origin. Results from the latest census count for 2010 provide us with a rich set of information from which to gain insight into our population diversity. This article is the last of four InContext articles to provide demographic snapshots of our minority population. Native Americans comprised 0.3 percent of Indiana’s population in 2010 and will be the focus of this snapshot. (View the articles on Indiana’s black population, Indiana’s Hispanic population and Indiana’s Asian population.) The overview that follows focuses on population, household formation, income and education."

These are statistics that Indigenous people in Indiana, USA, are experiencing. Very relevant to all of us.

“What the diagram points out is that not only are white and Indian values different and often conflict, but that the values of an ethnic group essentially determine that group’s educational system. When the two systems are merged together, or one system dominates, the result is poor performance by the Indian child, or the child whose ethnic group is in the weaker position within the school system.” ~Thomas Davis and Alfred Pyatskowit

The Education System Is Failing Native American Students. Here’s Proof. The Huffington Post |  By Rebecca Klein

The article did not mention the astronomical numbers of American Indian and Alaskan Indian children dropping out of school, too. One of students in this American Indian education program has dropped out of school at the age of eleven, and she is not the only one.

Hello everyone; this is a video made by my dear, young friend Winter. This video is advice she is giving on starting a new school and how to make friends. She is hoping to get more views so please check it out. She is Native American, a fancy shawl dancer, a soft ball player, and one of the kindest people I have ever known. Please, check it out.

Today after powwow styles dance class we all sat in a circle and talked about our experiences with identity, self acceptance, and assimilation. Everyone had something to say. Children and adults were able to talk about their feelings and give each other advice. 💕✨💖

There are so many native people in my Facebook saying anti-black racist things in regards to the ferguson protests. They are saying the black people protesting are proving they are ghetto, that Americans are tired of their shit, that Mike Brown’s murder was justified, and that they support Darren Wilson. Almost all of these people saying this are dark skinned native peoples or not white passing native peoples. This is terrifying. Anti-blackness is prevalent in native communities. I keep seeing posts about native peoples being in solidarity with Ferguson, but are we?

Pe'Sla Updates

The only current news article I could find is this one.  The LastRealIndians fundraiser successfully managed to raise their nine million dollar goal and could recover 1,900 acres of Pe'Sla, but not all of it. They are now trying to raise two million dollars in order to purchase the last missing part, in the north:

Unfortunately, they only have until November 30th to get the money together; if they cannot, they have access to a loan, but eventually this loan will need to be repaid anyways. (It is probably for that reason that the indiegogo page accepts donations until December 12.)

There are native people on my Facebook insulting the black people who are protesting in ferguson, and are saying the murder of Mike Brown was justified.. These are real native people, some white passing, many are not. These are people of color and white passing mixed raced people.. Siding with Darren Wilson. So can I really say native peoples are in solidarity with black people? No.
