indigenous-rising asked: you never answered me on why you think it is okay to use my daughter as a way to insult me.

theyreonlychasingkelsey    Because I don’t give a flying fuck about you or your daughter I just wanted to piss you off as much as you pissed me off. It’s not ok to go around calling people racist. You need to get you head out of your ass and realize that there’s a difference between being unintentionally offensive and being racist. You also need to realize that the only way to stop racism is to STOP FUCKING TALKING ABOUT IT. You’re the only one who even gives a fuck anyways.

people are disgusting. But go head, let’s keep talking about how we live in a post-racial society

Thanks for making this feministwerewolf <3 much love

he said he would delete it if a native person told him they were native and found it offensive, now he has a “stipulation”?

“I will offer to delete my original post, but only because it is culturally offensive to you and others, and only if you will stipulate to that effect that it is culturally offensive and not inherently racist, as I (nor I believe the model, the photographer or the publisher) was not mocking, denigrating or dehumanising Native Americans."  ~ tunes-tits-and-tetrameters

I will not agree to something I do not believe so you will delete the post. You said you would delete it if a native person told you they were offended. Now you are exerting your domination by telling me you will delete it if I admit that you are "right”?

it’s funny because my arguments are rational. i could get emotional and bring up things that are slightly unrelated or use insults but I don’t.

A Native woman who makes valid arguments as to why cultural appropriation is harmful, in the eyes of a white male, is doing more harm than good.

some-bunny-to-love:

So there was a ceremony used in Native American culture to test if a child was gay: they would put two things, a man’s hunting spear and a woman’s crop basket in a circle of brush and then tell the child to run in and grab only one object and leave. Then the tribal people would set the brush on fire and watch what the child took as he ran out. If he took the basket, he was gay.

This is inaccurate. I wish non-natives would stop speaking for all Native peoples while making up strange homophobic satires. Homosexuality does not mean every gay man is feminine, nor does it mean every lesbian is masculine. Gender identifying is a separate issue.

sunlight-chaser cultural appropriation is an act of racism. the warbonnet must be earned; it is not a prop. wearing a costume to depict a race is racist.

mask-of-glass   but how do you know if this person was doing it to depict the race? There IS a difference between racism and cultural appropriation. First of all, you can’t say “wearing a costume to depict a race is racist” because that is not. You are saying that if I were to wear something from where my tribe is from it is racist. It is called a costume because it is no longer the clothes that we wear now and if I wear it, yea, I’m wearing a costume. You really need to realize that by someone wearing the warbonnet, it does not take away from the actual significance of when an actual war chief wears it. There is a significance between two things. Denying someone the right to wear, or there by participate in a culture, because they are not of that culture is the racist part. If they mean no harm then let them. Racism and cultural appropriation works in two ways you know. I find it funny how it is okay for you to say that it is wrong for the white girl to wear the warbonnet as a costume, but I bet if you were judged because of, lets say you dyed your hair blond, that would be fine.  People should have cultural sensitivity, but being butthurt about everything is taking it too far.

 sunlight-chaser

1. The image below is the photo mask-of-glass posted; the person in the photo is wearing a costume warbonnet. This is an attempt to dress up as a Native American. Do not attempt to claim the model is not trying to depict a Native American.

image

2. Cultural appropriation is an act of racism.

3. If you wore something from your “tribe” that you earned the right to wear that is not cultural appropriation; do not attempt to put words in my mouth to win this argument.

4. The original warbonnet does not lose it’s significance even when people culturally appropriate it; again you are making outlandish statements pretending that that is what I said. However, when people wear a warbonnet they haven’t earned are mocking the cultures that use the warbonnet. It is offensive. And since media has used the warbonnet as a stereotyped-symbol to depict all Native peoples; when someone wears a costume warbonnet it is an attempt to wear a Native American costume. Wearing a costume to depict a race is racist.

5. “Denying someone the right to wear, or there by participate in a culture, because they are not of that culture is the racist part."  Denying non-natives the right to wear warbonnets is not racism. If it’s not your cultural and you haven’t earned the right to have one then do not wear it. There is a difference between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation.

6. "If they mean no harm then let them.” No. Life doesn’t work that way. You do not get to have everything you see. Intent is irrelevant. Stealing sacred items in attempt to use them as a costume prop is cultural appropriation, an act of racism. You do not have the right to take anything you want. You may have the freedom to be racist, but when you do something racist don’t be surprised when you get called out on it.

7. I am not “butthurt” about everything. I will react to people like you who promote racism against my people.
