i think the consequences are equal for both parties like if i were to wear a headdress i would get looked at like im a moron because im white and if a american indian person wore one they would get looked at like they are just different. either situation isn't so terrible.

the consequences are not equal, at all. When a white person misuses cultural items and wear racist costumes they are considered “spiritual”, “going through a phase”, and “just having fun”. White people, even when committing acts of racism, are protected by their privileges. When a person of color practices their culture they are seen as “different”, “unprofessional”, “dirty”, “savage”, and “ghetto”. Those view points do not carry the same burden. Western countries force assimilation on people of color, and they enforce this through acts of violence, discrimination, and genocide. A person of color who practices their culture is not safe, while you are safe.

here is an example, my “uncle” was wearing his regalia on the rancheria he lives on, during a powwow and a white fish and game man came in a took his hawk feathered headdress (not a warbonnet), and my uncle had to take it to court and couldn’t get it back for over three years. That is a consequence he experienced, that you would not.

i could go on forever with more examples but I would rather you do your own research.

There is a difference between expressing one’s individuality and stealing and misusing cultural items. One may have the freedom to steal these items and promote racism but that does not mean they should. One has the freedom to express themselves unless it invokes or insights violence against another person(s), First Amendment; and because racist costumes dehumanizes and often fetishizes people from marginalized cultures to wear them would be an act of violence.

Let’s open this up, shall we?

z0mbat:

Stop getting butthurt about what other people wear. Jesus christ. If anyone wants to wear a cross, headdress, nun costume, hijab, pentagram, gold chain…fuck it, who the fuck do you think you are to tell them they aren’t valid enough to wear it? You have no right. I literally don’t care. If you wear swastika because you like the way it looks I WILL NOT BE OFFENDED BECAUSE IT IS YOUR OWN FUCKING BODY AND YOUR OWN INDIVIDUAL TASTE. Is this really so hard to comprehend? So should we ban anyone who isn’t of European decent from wearing fucking uggs or yoga pants because a lot of white girls “identify” with it? No. Cause that’s hella dumb. If you think it looks cool, wear it. I don’t care if you’ve never opened a bible, never read the comic, are of no native blood, I literally could not give a fuck less.

Guarantee you twits who criticize others still wear green shirts on Saint Patrick’s day and wear togas to your college parties, is that not the exact same behavior you’re so butthurt about? Fuck off.

Stop telling people to be themselves if you’re just going to bash them for what they like.

End rant.

“fuck it, who the fuck do you think you are to tell them they aren’t valid enough to wear it? You have no right.”

You think people from a race and/or culture cannot decide who can wear their sacred items but you think you have the authority to speak over these people and give others permission to misuse these items? You do not have the authority to give anyone permission to misuse the items you have mentioned.

Also if im not mistaken, if you believe a caucasian shouldnt be allowed to wear a Native American headdress then you should be restricted from wearing any kind of clothing from our white culture, if you arent a hypocrite then you will go out and hunt a deer and use every part of it, and you will wear handmade deer skin clothing, like I said if you arent a hypocrite that is.

Answer

White people have forced assimilation on many cultures; including my own. It is not safe for Native women to wear their traditional clothing because they are targeted by white men who fetishize them as primitive sex objects. Our cultures were forced into change by white people; therefore, white people cannot complain if anyone has adopted a culture that was forced onto them.

i can totally see and understand how Harry wearing a Native American headdress could be seen as racist. i get it.
but for gods sake, someone of non-Native American decent can put a headdress on for a photo with NO RACIST CONNOTATION

You do not have the right or authority to tell non-Natives that they can steal and misuse the warbonnet. You do not get to decide what is and is not racist and harmful to Native Americans. And you do not get to pick and choose whose racist actions are actually harmful. Intention is irrelevant because the result is the same. He is promoting the dehumanization of Native Americans, the desecration of a sacred item, and is stereotyping and objectifying Native Americans. It is not okay. It is racist. You are defending acts of racism rather than those who are harmed by racism. Reevaluate your priorities.

oh boo fucking hoo

heylisablum:

so Harry wore a Native American headdress and that suddenly makes him racist?? Some of yall are so damn sensitive..I honestly don’t think that people need to get so worked up about something so small. The Liam thing was SUCH a bigger deal. Harry’s wearing something on his head. He’s trying on something in a store. You’ve done that shit too.

The argument ad populum (other people do it therefore it is okay!)  is an invalid argument. Cultural appropriation is act of racism. What Harry did was promote racist stereotypes against Native Americans, promoted the dehumanization of Native Americans, and desecrated a sacred item by wearing a fake warbonnet. The warbonnet is a sacred item that must be earned and its use is still practiced to this day by some Plains tribes. Wearing a costume warbonnet is disrespecting those cultures and stereotyping Native Americans. Dismissing his actions only show your priorities and how Native Americans aren’t one; and that you condone racism. Reevaluate your priorities.

Also you are dismissing the feelings of actual Native Americans who are offended by these acts of racism by saying “boo fucking hoo” and denying its significance. You are not entitled to speak over Native Americans about the racism we experience. You do not get to grant non-Natives (or anyone for that matter) the right to misuse the warbonnet.

the costume you are wearing ( or reblogging an image of ) is a racist stereotype. This image promotes racist stereotypes against Native Americans and is dehumanizing. By reducing an entire race into a costume or a character you are promoting the dehumanization of that race. When a race is viewed as subhuman violence and oppression against that race is inevitable, or in this case, continuous. Please delete this image, and do not wear racist costumes again.
