“Almost one-quarter (24 percent) of African Americans and over one-fifth (22 percent) of Hispanic Americans live in poverty (U.S. Census Bureau, 2004). Worse, Blacks and Hispanics are even more likely not to be simply poor, but to be extremely poor-with incomes under half the poverty level of Whites. In fact, at 16.1 percent, the share o the Black population that is extremely poor is over four times that of non-Hispanic whites (3.7 percent), and well above that of Hispanics (10.5 percent) (Henwood, 1997). ~The Crosscultural, Language, and Academic Development Handbook: A Complete K-12 Reference Guide, Fourth Edition, by Lynne T. I was rereading my old child development books, to refresh, and came across this table, indicating the gap in payments for people with the same education level; this shows one of the unfair benefits white people have. I often hear white people claim that the pay gap is a new thing that didn’t happen until the economy collapse in 2008 and later, but this table dates back to 2004. And even with the economy as an excuse-this goes without saying- it is still unfair to pay whites more for the same job, and having the same education level, as a person of color.
