the consequences are not equal, at all. When a white person misuses cultural items and wear racist costumes they are considered “spiritual”, “going through a phase”, and “just having fun”. White people, even when committing acts of racism, are protected by their privileges. When a person of color practices their culture they are seen as “different”, “unprofessional”, “dirty”, “savage”, and “ghetto”. Those view points do not carry the same burden. Western countries force assimilation on people of color, and they enforce this through acts of violence, discrimination, and genocide. A person of color who practices their culture is not safe, while you are safe.
here is an example, my “uncle” was wearing his regalia on the rancheria he lives on, during a powwow and a white fish and game man came in a took his hawk feathered headdress (not a warbonnet), and my uncle had to take it to court and couldn’t get it back for over three years. That is a consequence he experienced, that you would not.
i could go on forever with more examples but I would rather you do your own research.
