In Disney’s Pocahontas, she could talk to trees and animals and she could even understand the wind; not because Native peoples were considered some type of super-human, powerful group but because they were perceived as subhuman. She could talk to animals because she was considered to be an animal, herself.

I thought it just represented how in touch her people were with nature? She appreciated everything the earth had for her. Hence why the colonies were so unwelcome, they tore up the earth with no regard for anyone/thing. I could be wrong, I’m just saying how I interpreted it.

So in touch with nature that she can talk to animals, trees, and wind? That stereotype is dehumanizing because it means that Natives were so in touch with nature that they were subhuman.
