Would you think it racist that I don't consider Disney's Pocahontas to be the first "American" Disney Princess? Pocahontas was here before America and I think to label her the "American princess" is to erase her of her culture and ethnicity, especially so by giving her the Euro-centric title of "Princess". This is something largely debated in the Disney fandom. Personally, I consider Tiana to be Disney's first American princess, but as a non-native, I'm afraid my opinion sounds racist.
I have thought about this too. Pocahontas, historically, was not a princess. But I often see the term princess used to describe all of the disney women, including non-princess characters like Jane, Esmeralda, Mulan, Megara, Alice, etc. So if you consider all Disney female characters to be given the title of Princess, then one should not exclude Pocahontas, but if you are only listing actual Princess characters then she is not one. I call all Disney’s female characters to be princesses, but that is just my opinion.
