Social justice bloggers remind me of that one annoying as shit kid in school that would act all morally self-righteous and who everyone hated, even the teacher.
^an exaggeration used to belittle the people…
I am pro social justice in the real world. I believe that there are social issues that need to be fixed.
I’m anti tumblr social justice, people that try to make themselves oppressed because they’re completely ignorant of real world problems.
I’m anti tumblr social justice because they focus on pointless things-cultural appropriation, Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines instead of actual legitimate social issues (the fact that people are still treating minorities shittily in the real world, the fact that many women in third world countries have limited access to education and healthcare and are sold into trafficking)
~“Real world” insinuates that any discussions and activism done online is invalid; it isn’t. Conversation/education is the first step towards change.
~Comparing an individuals suffering to another person’s is unethical. Also this is a silencing technique.
Example:
Person 1: “My partner hit me!”
Person 2: “So. Some people get murdered by their partners; why are you complaining?”
Comparing one persons struggle/oppression/pain to another person’s is a matter of opinion. And even if one person suffered more than another it doesn’t mean that the person experienced less shouldn’t be sad/hurt/etc. Their pain and their experience is still valid. You are trying to erase the validity.
~ Many of the people who discuss cultural appropriation, such as myself, are not limited only to these subjects but also discuss more world wide issues as well.
And even if a person only focused on one topic, for example, that doesn’t mean they do not care about anything else nor does it mean that what they do care about is invalid.
~ You are down playing the harm that is promoted and perpetuated by those who commit cultural appropriation, and enjoy or create videos like the one Robin Thicke was in. These two examples promote dehumanizing ideals.
~ You invalidate those who perform differently then you would like them to. You invalidate the work and effort put forth by people who write about these topics. Your way is not the best way. Your way is not the only way.
