If I wanted to expand my knowledge and help expand others' by learning about and participating in cultural practices other than my own, what advice would you give so that I can make sure I'm not propagating cultural appropriation rather than cultural diffusion (which is a term I've only just now learned thanks to you!)? Thanks.

I will need a bit more info to answer this properly. My advice would be to research cultural appreciation until you are able to decipher the difference between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation.
Cultural appreciation, which is a good thing, is learning about a cultural in a respectful manner. And understanding that sometimes the respectful manner is understanding and accepting that your presence is not respectful. Appreciation takes studying and respectful participation. Researching a culture includes having an understanding of their histories, religion(s), language(s), customs, practices, music, dance, food, etc. I hope this helped a little.
