I cannot speak for you, your tribe, and whether it is appropriate for you to take up powwow dancing because I do not know if it treads upon your beliefs, or your tribe’s beliefs. Powwows adapted from something traditional (and differing from tribe to tribe) into something rebellious. For many it became a way of saying we are still here. From the 1920’s and up it became about resilience and maintaining cultures. Dancing competitions spread to encourage the children to participate. Many powwows are intertribal, welcoming all Nations. Some are private powwows, and some are Big Times. Big Times can be both private and public events. If you were okay with learning powwow dancing, learning powwow etiquette, etc, and participate that is something you must ask yourself and your family. I cannot answer for you. It would not be appropriation for you to learn to dance and participate respectfully, in my opinion. Anyone else want to give your thoughts, too? Please?

Is it possible for other NDNs who don't traditionally have powwow in their culture to learn powwow dancing anyways? I come from a tribe that only does round dances, not anything like the jingle dress dance or the fancy shawl dance. Would it be acceptable for me to still learn the dances?
