People who say sexism just happens to women remind me of people who say racism just happens to black people.

Like, no.

sexism = prejudice + power. men are the oppressive power over women; therefore, men are not oppressed….

f-yeah-stoners

But to blanket term “men, especially white men” as oppressors to me seems like an extremely sexist and ignorant to do in itself. It’s like someone saying “hey a lot of middle eastern people are terrorists.”

No. That may be where our perception of where the terrorist/oppressor comes from, but literally ANYONE can terrorize/oppress another group of people.

Am I saying men haven’t been known to oppress people? Fuck no. I’m just saying that not only men can oppress other peoples.

White people are an oppressive power; men are an oppressive power.

bornabitch-allthedaysandnights

OP, not anyone can be oppressive. To have the ability to oppress or marginalize another person you have to be a part of the dominant culture.

In the Western world white people are the dominant culture.

You literally cannot be racist against white people or sexist towards men because being racist or sexist requires having the societal power to back it up.

and this post is excellent

You can throw all of your biased sources at me all you want.

I am a human.

I do not oppress.

I was literally born a white male and that's it.

To say that to be oppressed you have to have certain criteria met is bullshit.

Oppression comes from power and hatred. You're basically saying that only white men are in power and are the only people that hate another race/gender.

God fucking dammit seriously.

You hate being marginalized by society then going and doing it do another group of people isn't really working in a positive direction.

Shit like this pisses me off. I AM NOT TRYING TO MAKE ANY LESS LIGHT OF THE FEMINIST STRUGGLE.

I'm saying look outside the shit that affects you and realize it ISNT JUST AFFECTING YOU. Don't go and start doing what the people you're fighting against do.

One can benefit from white privilege and/or male privilege without wanting to.

  • Recognizing one’s oppressor is not prejudiced.
  • Recognizing that one can be part of an oppressive group and doing what they can to dismantle injustice is not prejudiced.
  • Recognizing that someone from an oppressive group is in fact oppressive is not prejudiced.
  • Recognizing an oppressive power is not marginalizing said group.
