People who say sexism just happens to women remind me of people who say racism just happens to black people.
Like, no.
sexism = prejudice + power. men are the oppressive power over women; therefore, men are not oppressed….
But to blanket term “men, especially white men” as oppressors to me seems like an extremely sexist and ignorant to do in itself. It’s like someone saying “hey a lot of middle eastern people are terrorists.”
No. That may be where our perception of where the terrorist/oppressor comes from, but literally ANYONE can terrorize/oppress another group of people.
Am I saying men haven’t been known to oppress people? Fuck no. I’m just saying that not only men can oppress other peoples.
White people are an oppressive power; men are an oppressive power.
OP, not anyone can be oppressive. To have the ability to oppress or marginalize another person you have to be a part of the dominant culture.
In the Western world white people are the dominant culture.
You literally cannot be racist against white people or sexist towards men because being racist or sexist requires having the societal power to back it up.
