saying it’s not racist if it’s towards whites
is like saying it’s not sexist if it’s towards men
it’s still racism
it’s still sexism
you are mistaking racism and sexism for prejudice. racism = prejudice + power; sexism also is a power structure.
oppressive groups are the ones in power, therefore they are not oppressed. white people can experience prejudice and discrimination but they do not experience racism because they are the oppressive group. Same goes for men. White men are the ultimate oppressive group and therefore do not experience sexism because they are the oppressors, not the victims.
prejudice is having a belief about someone based off of their race, gender, religion, etc etc.
racism = prejudice + power.
racism and sexism are not completely about oppression, it is literally in the definition
the majority of racism and sexism is to do with oppression, but not all
the definition of racism:
1. the belief that races have distinctive cultural characteristics determined by hereditary factors and that this endows some races with an intrinsic superiority over others
2. abusive or aggressive behaviour towards members of another race on the basis of such a belief
i have seen abusive text posts on tumblr that make general sweeping statements about all whites as if all white people act exactly the same way and are all irredeemable monsters
i agree that the majority of the time it is white people who are racist but there are plenty of examples of racism towards whites, namely the “abusive or aggressive behavior” based upon the belief that the race of the perpetrator is superior to that of the person who the behavior is directed towards
Case study: a 9 year old boy was bullied so badly for being white at a school with a white minority and an asian majority that he actually hung himself. A nine year old white child was bullied for the colour of his skin to the point where he hung himself. I don’t understand how some people can hear about occurences like that and still say that racism is never directed towards whites.
definition of sexism:
1. attitudes or behavior based on traditional stereotypes of sexual roles.
2. discrimination or devaluation based on a person’s sex, as in restricted job opportunities; especially, such discrimination directed against women.
Again, I agree with you that the majority of sexism is committed by white men, but it is not limited to their race or to their gender. See point 2, where it says “discrimination or devaluation based on a person’s sex”. That applies to every sex. Not just women. Example: misandry. Misandry is the hatred of men and boys as a group in society. Misandry is a form of sexism, one just as valid although admittedly less common than misogyny. Another example: female supremacists.
My point is just that however common or uncommon they are, sexism is still sexism when it is directed at men and racism is still racism when directed at whites.
The whole point of condemning sexism and racism is so that the sexes and races become equal, which would benefit everyone, not so that the tables are turned on the most common perpetrator. Because in the end that benefits nobody, although perpetrators of racism and sexism do deserve some form of punishment.
The dictionary’s definition is incomplete and incorrect, not to mention it was written over 100 years ago by a white man and maintained by white people. If you take a sociology class hopefully you will learn about the true definition of racism. You are still mistaking it for prejudice.
