The lady on the left was adopted out at 10 months old. She was separated from her brother (on right) and the rest of her siblings for 28 years because there was no ICWA in 1968 to protect our families. She was raised in a non-Indian home and went to a non-Indian school where in 4th grade a kid cut her ponytail off in class and exclaimed that he “scalped a squaw”; in 6th grade she was tied to a flagpole and they did a mock raindance around her. Her brother wished he could have been there to protect her but they’re here decades later enjoying the powwow. This is exactly why we do what we do to hold these social services and ICWA violating systems accountable. They told LRI that Nov.2, 2013 there will be a welcome home powwow to receive adoptees from all over back to the circle in Minneapolis, MN. stay strong relatives. No Longer Shall this Injustice Continue.
