I never said I was Native you dunce. I’m Mexican.
It’s not funny and sarcastic to gloss over the dehumanization of other people. It’s disgusting and racist.
The only ignorant person here is you. And let me guess you’re a 1/32 descendant of a Cherokee princess right?
If you’re making light of the dehumanization of other people, I don’t give a fuck whether you think you’re a racist or not. You’re contributing to dehumanization and racism with your OP. FULL STOP.
“But someone wearing a headdress shouldn’t really offend anyone.”
Why? Because you say so? That’s not a good enough reason.
OP are their items in your culture that you believe to be sacred? If someone copied it from you and used it to dress up like you how would you feel?
If it’s on Halloween I would compliment them and tell them a bit about it. To help spread knowledge instead of fear an shame. Like people who wear kilts all the time that have no knowledge of what they mean, instead of getting offended and telling them they shouldn’t wear it (besides the fact of clashing terribly with their current outfit) I instead let them know why they are so cool and awesome in the first place.
Cultural appreciation is a great thing; spreading information and knowledge about one’s culture. But cultural appropriation is a dehumanizing and disrespectful thing to do.
The people dressing up as “Indians” aren’t doing it to learn about the tribes they are stereotyping. They aren’t wearing those costume so that some Native person will pull them aside and talk to them about regalia and other pieces. They aren’t wearing those costumes to appreciate the people they are stereotyping.
