my birthname is melissa too, i was named after my grandma who had died of cancer a year before i was born. i never related to this name, and i don't like it. it doesn't feel like me, esp since i'm not cis and it's such a feminine name. i would like to legally change it, but i know it would kill my parents. idk, i just feel you on that issue. but you can always assert a different name for yourself, even if you can't legally change it.

That sounds like a tough situation, choosing between being true to yourself and wanting to honor your family. My middle name is my Grandmother’s name but I will keep her name in my name (somewhere) when I legally change my name. I wish you the best; I feel for you. *hugs*
