Cyrus is benefiting from the exploitation of Black cultures. When she twerks she is seen as “edgy” and “cool”; when Black women twerk they are seen as “dangerous”, “slutty”, and “animalistic”. Cyrus is benefiting from her White privilege and using it to make money off of cultures that are not her own.

…twerking is a ‘dance’ where you shake your butt vigorously while bent over. I’m pretty sure no one thinks it isn’t slutty or dangerous or whatever. Like, really? she’s supposedly classier because she’s white? where are you even getting that people think that? it’s shaking your butt, not drinking from a whites-only fountain.

I can’t even tell if you’re trolling. are you trolling?

Have you done any research on this subject? No, I am not a troll, and even if I were that wouldn’t validate your comment. Her video depicts her with a “grill”, “twerking”, and making signals. She is stealing from Black cultures and making money off of it.

Did Donald Glover trademark the ‘twerk’? Does Jay-z have a copyright on rap music? Who exactly is she stealing from, and why is it apparently just her? And who should I send a licensing fee to if I want dance the waltz?

I can’t believe no one’s pressing charges! She was making signals! (*gasp!*)

Culture is not an owned thing that can sue others for stealing from it. Why don’t you care that Cyrus is promoting racism against Black people? By using Black cultures as a costume she is promoting the idea that Black people are subhuman.

Okay. I apologize for the unnecessary sarcasm earlier. I think that you’re jumping to conclusions, big-time. I’ll admit i haven’t researched twerking so much, but what i do know is that she isn’t the first or the last white person to adopt a piece of culture from another. All cultures do it within and between almost every other culture they manage to communicate with. I’m not saying she isn’t doing something distasteful if she’s sexualizing a dance that wasn’t meant to be sexualized, and it doesn’t even matter if she sexualized it or not.

To agree with you that she’s being shallow - I’d bet that all she’s thinking is, “i’ma shake my butt and look sexy so people watch me on TV” (of course, maybe she’s thinking, “the stigma of being a child star and being known for being on a kids show makes it impossible to exercise my sexuality so if I establish myself as a sexual person then maybe I’ll stop getting weird looks every time i approach i guy.”  she could be thinking a million things.

Regardless of what she’s really thinking, you’re being incredibly presumptuous to declare her a public enemy of black rights, especially if you consider that literally every complaint about her behavior that I’ve seen has condemned her for being promiscuous, and nowhere have I heard it said that she’s mocking black people in any way. (which is not to say it hasn’t been said, but that it’s said so rarely that it’s safe to say most people don’t get that message even remotely)

I’m all for standing up for rights and oppression and all that, but it’s immature and dangerous to toss accusations like that about something you simply cannot know. It’s reminiscent of the Salem Witch Trials - as if one can shout witch to get someone to the gallows.  And that’s exactly what it’s like inside this subculture of social justice on the internet. (i mean misplaced social justice, not all social justice) People like you can start a metaphorical wildfire with the words you say about someone, but all it does is burn everything. you can fight hate with hate, especially when there’s nothing to fight at all.

Again, I fully support rights and justice. but just be careful and mindful who you accuse. innocents have been given the death penalty before, both metaphorically and literally, so just give everyone a fair trial.

Her intent is irrelevant. There is no excuse for her behavior and the outcome of her behavior is more important then her intent. I haven’t “slut shamed” her or called her “shallow”; you are trying to defend her with things I haven’t insulted her with in attempt to render everything I say invalid. Cultural Appropriation is an act of racism. No matter the intent. And there is a difference between cultural diffusion and cultural appropriation. The outcome is: dehumanizing and reducing a culture into a racist stereotype. Her intent: irrelevant.
