1. Wearing feathers in your hair alone is not appropriation. Wearing feathers in your hair and saying “omg I’m so Native right now” is appropriation.

From time to time I have been known to braid a feather into my hair or even wear a feather sticking up from my head. It irks me a little that some would call this cultural appropriation…

So, if you see me with feathers in my hair don’t assume it is because I am borrowing this display from someone else’s culture.

I stopped reading at “but some people seem to go out of their way to be offended.”

That’s some ignorant bigoted shit right there.

No. Context is important.  It really isn’t ignorant or bigoted.  I cleaned up the thread of the conversation so that you can see it in context… Actually taking the time to read really does help communication ;-)

So I said that I like to wear feathers from time to time and it is not cultural appropriation.  You replied, agreeing this was not appropriation.  I said, yes, thank you for agree that it was not appropriation, but some people seem to go out of their way to be offended.  What people was I talking about?  Obviously people that would think my wearing a feather is by itself cultural appropriation.  In context you can see this wasn’t a blanket statement dismissing people who are offended by cultural appropriation but rather related to this specific case… but you kinda went out of your way to be offended by what I wrote :-P

“out of their way to be offended”…..

you really need to reflect on that comment.

Feathers have been used by many cultures in many parts of the world; however, I must ask how important is this feather wearing to you? Does your fashion accessory really matter more than the exploitation of a culture? If you are offending people is it more important to carry on with your fashion statement?
