It it okay for a (white female) photographer interested in Native American culture to do photo shoots exploring it? If so, what are the limitations? Eg. What if the model is white, or Asian? What if the photographer doesn't take an all traditional approach and puts their own creative spin on the shoot? Should any creative license be allowed? If your answer to any of these questions is 'no' please say why and what would have to chance for it to be okay to explore the culture? Thanks :)

Answer

I’m not sure what you mean by “exploring culture”. If you mean to dress models up in “Native American” costumes then that is cultural appropriation. When I hear the term “exploring culture” I think of a person learning about a culture; learning their history, their traditions, their language, etc.
