So I’ve looked at many different opinions on cultural appropriation after having it explained to me, and I’ve come to a conclusion:

To break it down to the OP:

I wear a suit and tie to make a living.

You wear “ethnic clothing" to get compliments.

I refuse to wear your clothes, I can’t support my wife and child.

You don’t wear those clothes, you’re deprived of an easy way to differentiate yourself from the crowd, and thus have to work hard to be original.
