Native American costumes are racist?!? Well I hope not since my 8 year old decided to dress as an Indian last year for Halloween. It was one of the few costumes that wasn't too “sexy” for an 8 year old girl to wear! She’s not mocking the Native American heritage, she just thinks they are pretty.

Answer

Wearing “Native American" costumes not only stereotype an entire race but also dehumanizes that race. Wearing a costume to depict an entire race is racist. We are not a costume. When a race and/or culture is reduced to a costume that group is seen as something comical and subhuman. When a group is viewed as subhuman oppression and violence towards that group is inevitable.

Please, do not force children to perform racist acts.
