Also, people in america dress up in leather pants as german costumes (might be less than native americans, but still, they do.) They are very traditional for us and we only wear them for important trational celebrations. Do they care/know about that? no. do we call it racism? no. See?
posting photos of non-natives wearing costume warbonnets promotes racism indigenous-rising

yes, I got it. I didn’t mean to, as I said. I’m quite sensitive with racism, because anything just a bit patriotic I do as a german can be considered racist. And I’d say I’m definitely not racist. Also I don’t want to promote racism in any way and why should people wearing warbonnets as costumes promote racism? I know that they are traditional and it’s misused, but still it is not meant in a bad way and I don’t see how it should promote racism. Also wearing native american clothing as costumes isn’t racism, I’d say. what about all those hipster girls wearing crosses and not being christian at all? also anyone can draw a magen david on their arm or so, it is not considered as racism. To quote Wikipedia: “Racism is usually defined as views, practices and actions reflecting the belief that humanity is divided into distinct biological groups called races and that members of a certain race share certain attributes which make that group as a whole less desirable, more desirable, inferior, or superior.”
A photo of a girl wearing a warbonnet doesn’t show that native-american are less desirable or anything like that! It is not done through the belief that they are worse or others are better! This isn’t racism and neither does it promote racism!

I have a link on my tumblr that goes into greater detail why cultural appropriation is an act of racism. The media has used the warbonnet as a stereotype to depict all Native Americans therefore when non-natives wear a warbonnet they are wearing a costume to depict all Native Americans. Wearing a costume to depict an entire race is racist.

The warbonnet is a sacred item, each feather must be earned, and only the nations who traditionally use the warbonnet can approve of a person wearing a warbonnet. The photo you posted is of a non-native person wearing a costume warbonnet. That person has not earned the right to wear a warbonnet. They are mocking the nations who traditionally use the warbonnet and showing their disrespect by taking something sacred and turning it into a costume piece. And by posting it you are promoting that racism.

Many Native peoples today are afraid of wearing their traditional regalias and or clothing because they could be insulted by non-natives and in extreme cases attacked by non-natives. But white girls can wear Native American items and look “spiritual”, “pretty”, and “creative”. It is not fair. Native Americans have suffered from genocide, rape, murder, assimilation, relocation, and other forms of oppressions at the hands of white people who still oppress us, so it is a greater insult for a white person to be able to steal our sacred items. Again, I have an article and references written on this subject, titled “Cultural Appropriation”. There are also many articles written on this subject available on the internet.
