I try to follow the Food Pyramid, the newest updated one. The biggest thing I implement in her diet is organic food. We farm and garden, we have our own fruits, veggies, herbs, and eggs. When I grocery shop, I am very fortunate and privileged to have two Organic Health Food stores in the city 15 mins away, I buy all organic foods. I avoid all processed foods.
I do the Try-something-new-for-dinner one night a week, because she is not very willing to try new things. Keep in mind, some children will only like what they have always had, rather than always being ready to try something new, so sometimes you must make it part of your life.
For example, she never chooses to eat candy, because it wasn’t a typical thing we ate. It is available during the holidays and even when people try to give her some candy she refuses. She is like that with ice creams, chips, candy and other “junk foods”. It isn’t the norm so she doesn’t want it.
As for indigenous food, the foods indigenous to the area I live in are salmon, deer, nuts, and certain fruits etc. We talk about what our friends eat and what indigenous people ate here. She eats salmon on occasion, she eats indigenous fruits and nuts. She will not eat deer. Since she was a toddler she has refused to eat certain meats, pig, deer, buffalo, cow meats etc. She does not want to eat certain animals and I will not force her to. (She likes eating fish so she’s not vegetarian? but thinks eating certain animals is not okay)
