Just getting my thoughts out; I will have to rewrite this later.
When I think about white privilege a lot of things come to mind.
One of those thoughts is: white privilege is having the most difficult thing you have to face is what you will choose to do with your life.
when I have had white friends, they all have their own issues, which are not easy situation, but seem so focused on themselves.
ex.) will i go to the college i want or the one my mom wants?
ex.) will i ignore my mom telling me to be a doctor so i can pursue my dance career?
That is not to say no PoC experience these situations; however, they have been through worse.
Every part of my life is devoted to keeping my culture alive. Everything I do has to be for my community.
“Don’t marry that guy; he isn’t Native, think about your future children!”
“You’re going to leave us? This is bigger then your selfish wants, this about all of us.”
“What are you going to contribute to our community?”
“Get an education; we need to have more educated Natives.”
It’s never “about me” it is always about all Native peoples.
Which is not a bad thing. But I get annoyed with people who complain about their struggles, when their struggles only affect themselves, and possibly their family. They focus on themselves every second of the day. That is white privilege.
