makes me sick when i see ppl like this daughter-of-nature
who think they have a right to take whatever they want from any culture
and then call us bullies when we say no.
entitled, spoiled little racist.
“U CANT DO THAT UR WHITE!”…
-Just a note, only 1.5% of the U.S. population are registered Native Americans. There is a registry you have to sign up for and be accepted into in order for any Native American to take you seriously when you claim to be one or part of the culture. You also have to have a set percentage of ancestry, and live on a reservation/trust land to get in. Having “native blood!” RARELY counts if it’s less than half, which yours appears to be since you’re as pale as I am. I’m as likely to believe your claim of it being your culture as I am to believe a 14-year-old that says she’s a Wiccan. (And yes, there are requirements to get into that too.) I will happily take back what I just said and apologize for not believing you if you can prove otherwise. (No, “U CANT TELL ME WHAT RACE I IDENTIFY AS” doesn’t count, because identifying as a race doesn’t make you part of it.)
-Because wearing jewelry given to as a gift by somebody who is Native American, or being invited to a party by somebody who is Native American is totally racist and cultural appropriation. No, I’m not saying it’s okay to do something like wear a war bonnet or eagle feathers for fun if you didn’t earn it. But for fucks sake, jewelry was meant to be decorative, how DARE somebody wear it like a decoration!? APPROPRIATIONSZ!
One last thing, the biggest reason I doubt you’re really part of the Native Culture, because ALL of the registered Native Americans I’ve met are all for spreading their culture for awareness for the sake of it not dying off. (It’s in danger of that, BTW. Let me point back to the REALLY small number that is the percentage of Native American people.) You on the other hand are just acting like every other dumb ass on Tumblr so you can get brownie points for being a victim. Good job.
Feel free to screencap this to all of your white-tears/ social justice blogs if it pisses you off that much, though. Your social justice anger makes my white privilege go doki-doki.
white privilege<— trying to tell me how to be my own race and denying that i am my own race.
wearing Native made necklaces is not cultural appropriation. I have discussed what is and is not appropriation over and over. daughter-of-nature was declaring that she had the right to wear costume warbonnets and that we are “bitching” about it.
I don’t care if you don’t believe that I am Native. I know who I am and I won’t be broken because you feel entitled enough to tell me how to be Native.
Actually… that’s not white privilege, because anybody with a functioning brain can call you out, no matter their skin color.
You linked to a post where a girl said she wore jewelry given to her by her adoptive grandmother, and went to a powwow with a native american friend. (Or she used them as examples, which does happen IRL.) You linked it to her saying she was wrong and racist.
I’m not telling you how to be Native, I’m just stating facts. I compared it to Wiccans because it’s a similar thing. It is an exclusive group, and SAYING you take part in the culture and having a little bit of ancestry isn’t enough to make you part of it. Because how how thin the blood was spread, there ARE requirements for being considered a “real” Native. I’m not making this up: http://www.native-american-online.org/tribal-enrollment.htm
So no, I’m not a white girl telling you how to be a Native American. I’m a white girl repeating what Native Americans have to say about how to be a Native American.
As far as cultural appropriation goes, the big things that get Native Americans upset is when other people wear things that have to be earned. (Eagle feathers and war bonnets being an example.) It’s like wearing a purple heart without earning it, and that’s why it’s bad. Wearing things like clothes, jewelry, being invited to a pow wow, listening to native music and getting a tattoo aren’t, because they don’t have that kind of significance in that culture.
However, I would like to point out that the death of a culture is the death of a people. Trying to prevent culture sharing by calling it “appropriation” and trying to intimidate people out of it IS contributing to the death of the culture, seeing as the number of people who are a part of it are already pretty damn low.
Edit: On another note, congratulations, your game of pretend makes you no different from this guy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ok9BWE4UIU (Yes, he does have Cherokee ancestry.)
the original post that started all these conversations was a native person saying this is why white can’t steal our cultural items, such war bonnets. daughter-of-nature said that is was racist and that she can do it if she wants.
you said i am not native. and you tried to clarify what a native person is.
you have no right to tell me what and who i am.
First Amendment states otherwise, dear. You have a right to disagree/get offended/ignore me/get completely pissed off though.
I’m of Irish descent. Like, somewhere around 75%. I can tell you which province my family came from, how long they’ve been in the Americas, and this has always been important to me. But do you know what somebody who was born and raised in Ireland would do if I went to Ireland, claiming to be Irish, trying to have a say in their politics, and telling others that they can’t wear Celtic knots? They would laugh at my face, tell me to shut up, or maybe even slug me. Wanna know why? Because ultimately I’m a “Yank.” No amount of Irish heritage is going to change that.
Same goes for you. Unless you live on a reservation and deal with everything real natives have to deal with every day, and are part of their registry, then hate to break it to ya’, you AREN’T a Native. Welcome to the land of white-privilege, sister!~
And… I read those posts. The first post was about how Natives were forced to assimilate into our culture. The next few posts were about how evil white people are, and how we should stay away from their culture entirely. Daughter-of-Nature did have a pretty decent counter-argument, about how Natives are usually delighted to share their culture, and the only response she got was “Lol white guilt tears”. (SJWs can’t form an argument to save their lives, can they?)
If you honestly got “Lol I can do whatever I want with warbonnets!” from her post, then I’d be happy to try to find a community college for you somewhere so you can take a reading class.
i am Native. I won’t debate this with you.
You are trying to dismiss my argument by saying I’m not Native.
Read her blog and about cultural appropriation.
