I had a conversation last night with some Californian folks about whether racism is worse in the South or here. And pretty much nobody knew that more ppl have died at the hands of cops in California this year than anywhere else in the US.
Californians really tend to underestimate how racist our state is. There’s places in the South that are WAY safer for a Black person than Oakland or Los Angeles.
Racially, we are absolutely not a progressive state. There’s no such thing as a progressive state when it comes to racism.
And then there’s that inconvenient history about how Nazi eugenics found root in California…
we west coasters are really fond of pretending racism was never that bad here but oops, portland was a sundown town and oregon was one big red line for decades
And the neighborhoods and housing crisis isn’t an accident!
It’s racism at work with gentrification pushing any neighborhood to sky high rents resulting in the rest of us to suffer.
2K$ to start for a one bedroom apartment and let’s not pretend that renters and landlords don’t enjoy being “choosy” about what “type” of tenants…
It’s so racist in California, the only difference is the south seems more open about it and more accepting.
California is in denial about racism.
