Just about all of us, regardless of bq, have heard the phrase, “well, you don’t look native.” I think it’s rather telling that when I respond by asking what a native looks like, they almost always say “I don’t know” (occasionally I hear “like Pocahontas” tacked on the end). They say they don’t know, but that’s not quite true; to the colonizer, a native looks like the nameless “Indian Chief” in Peter Pan, or like a skull in a warbonnet. To them, we are simply a caricature of a long-gone people. The reason they “don’t know” is because they think of us as already dead.
