Did you know that the last Confederate general to surrender to the Union was a Native American named Stand Watie?

I didn’t know he was the actual last, but that is interesting. I will read about it when I get some time. The last Cherokee history course I took, taught by Julia Coates, gave the impression that the reason the Cherokee peoples joined the Confederates were because they were promised land and did it out of survival. (they weren’t given the land promised to them, of course.) But I am always researching what I can. Care to discuss this further?

I wouldn’t sum it up to just land, you should look at the history of the Freedmen of the Five Southeastern Tribes.

I will look that up. I have done some research on the Freedmen group because that came up during class and I kept hearing people deny their rights to Cherokee citizenship and I didn’t understand it. But I want to learn more. Are there any good books you would recommend on the subject(s)?

I’m a Chickasaw Freedmen, so I’ve read The Chickasaw Freedmen by Daniel Littlefield and there’s a book that discusses Freedwomen on the Trail of Tears called Trail Sisters by Linda Reese I really want to read.

thank you so much for the info. We have one of these books at work that  Ican borrow; the other I will happily buy online. thanks for the info :)
