Did you know that the last Confederate general to surrender to the Union was a Native American named Stand Watie?

I didn’t know he was the actual last, but that is interesting. I will read about it when I get some time. The last Cherokee history course I took, taught by Julia Coates, gave the impression that the reason the Cherokee peoples joined the Confederates were because they were promised land and did it out of survival. (they weren’t given the land promised to them, of course.) But I am always researching what I can. Care to discuss this further?
