Go back in time to save turkeys from being a popular meal; but doesn’t go back in time to stop the white settlers from committing genocide against Native Americans.

Genocide seems like a good subject for a kids movie.

There are children who experience genocide, who’s people experience genocide, who’s people have experienced genocide. there are children who can’t not know about genocide.

there are appropriate ways to discuss genocide without scarring or harming a child. and for those who live with or live with the knowledge of genocide do they not deserve representation? who is really being protected by not discussion genocide? the oppressive group, not the oppressed.

there are children’s movies that hint at or depict genocide, in a less traumatizing way; films such as Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron, Pocahontas I & II (though vague and incorrect) and more. Disney films have depicted murder, death, loss, etc in a way that doesn’t harm most children. it is possible to discuss rough subjects with children. I am an educator, and I know that in California we start discussing genocide of indigenous peoples in fourth grade, when children are around 8 years old.

Back to this movie. Out of all the ideas and valid options there are for making movies about saving animals, they chose to have a setting that presents native americans and they chose to go with saving turkeys. this film set the stage and chose turkey over native americans.

Because its a fucking children’s cartoon, not a historical documentary. Its there for fucking entertainment.

Every informed person knows it was plague not genocide that wiped out 80% of them. Nobody calls the “Black Death” across Europe a genocide but it was brought by the Chinese. Did they kill some? Well yeah new place new ppl there’s gonna be a fight in there somewhere but they didn’t just go around and kill 80% by hand

Wrong. Most murders were committed by the use of physical violence. The purposeful biological warfare (the spread of small pox etc) killed more than 20 thousand indigenous people. Millions were murdered by violence. There are people and educators who promote your false version to spare them of feeling guilt or holding responsibility. And you can call me uneducated or dumb all you like, it doesn’t change what actually happened.

You’re like… claiming shit that isn’t true without sources. How is anyone supposed to take you seriously?

Oh look. A person bringing up natives just for the sake of pointing out a lot of us were killed when the settlers came. Thanks for thinking of us once a year or to make a political statement. 😒

Also, yes some settlers did use smallpox on purpose for some tribes. But they didn’t bring it over on purpose to kill us. And yes, a lot of us were murdered, raped, or integrated into ‘civilized’ society. But a lot more of us were killed by diseases we had never seen and so had no natural defense for. And Disney did Pocahontas I and II beautifully. They had great representation without making us super stereotypical while getting the point across that some of the settlers were shit heads. But not all of them (a lot of natives and settlers actually did work together and lived in peace all over the U.S. They were considered the ‘peaceful nations’ where those who fought against the settlers 'warring nations’ and a LOT of native tribes would use this to their advantage to get rid of rival tribes. Which actually accounts for a lot of that murder you were talking about.)

“ Oh look. A person bringing up natives just for the sake of pointing out a lot of us were killed when the settlers came. Thanks for thinking of us once a year or to make a political statement. 😒 “ my blog is mainly about indigenous peoples of the “Americas” rights and the preservation of indigenous cultures. so this is not a once in a while topic. However, the people I have been arguing with on this posts are the types who ignore indigenous issues and are continuing to try to silence me, an indigenous person, on this very post. you called out me and not them? that seems odd to me.

Small pox was used as biological ware fair. The spread of small pox was intentional. And though many indigenous people were killed by small pox (which is still murder) millions more were killed by physical violence committed by white settlers. the white people in power, then, since then, and now, are purposely committing genocide against indigenous peoples.

And neither Pocahontas movies were accurate, both depicted racial stereotypes, and the movie portrayed the indigenous people as being just as guilty as the white settlers, which is racist and victim blaming. So no neither Pocahontas movies represented us “beautifully”. The very fact that they portrayed Pocahontas as John Smith’s love interest in disgusting. He was an adult man and Pocahontas was around 9-11 years old when John Smith began raping her. She was not his love interest. She was a rape victim.
