I am Cherokee and I believe this is an amazing photo, what I see is a beautiful young woman who respects the Native American tribes. Our tribes are proud, strong and brave with authentic values that live beneath our imperfections. Some of our tribal members are artisans and make these to sell to the “white man,” so why then condemn when we promote the sale… personally my opinion is we are all created equal, we are one nation under God and that includes this whole world so I honor you Christina Fallin for standing up and standing proud when others choose to throw stones… John 8:7

7) So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

No. This is not okay. This is a racist and genocidal act.

You can buy those things and not wear them. You don’t get to wear stuff because you think it looks cool, or because you think it’s “honoring” Native Americans. Just because you’re Cherokee, doesn’t mean you speak for all 556+ tribes. I don’t care how offended you’re not, it’s disrespectful.

OP if you are Cherokee then you aren’t even from a tribe who traditionally practices the use of the warbonnet, so what gives you the right to give anyone permission to misuse it? You do not have the authority to give anyone consent to wear it.

And just because you claim to be Native American does not mean you speak for all Native peoples, nor can you speak for the tribes who practice the use of the warbonnet. Just because you don’t find it offensive doesn’t mean no one else does.

You, like the woman in the photograph, are promoting racist stereotypes,  the desecration of the significance of the warbonnet, and the fetishization of Native women.

too often when white people say they want to celebrate another culture it is self-serving. they want to “celebrate” a culture by taking from it, however authentic or unauthentic, to make themselves look spiritual/accepting/accepted/etc. too often celebrating a culture is never about the people from these cultures.

Is the CAC Crew or Venture Crew still performing bogus Native American dancing and other Native demonstrations?

I cannot answer this with any certainty. They have blocked me from their facebook ever since I sent them a comment on their photo stating that the warbonnet is sacred and why it is offensive to misuse it’s likeness. But i doubt the words from actual Native people have changed their attitudes; so my guess is they will continue their racist actions.

Fetishising? Can I not appreciate aesthetic art without it having to be about sex? How many people wear things with dragons, chinese symbols, shamrocks, different languages, indian peace symbols, tartans, flags, and all sorts of other shit. I understand there is a problem with the sexualisation of native women but I don't think this t-shirt is it. I am not trying to start an argument. I just want to understand why I can't wear something like that in celebration of your culture.

The woman on your shirt is wearing a poorly illustrated warbonnet. You can claim it is not fetishizing, but it is. Native women are represented in media only as primitive sex objects. We are not represented in any kind of respectful way. Tattoos of women are almost always sexualized; and though the woman character on your shirt does not have a body it doesn’t make it any less fetishized. We are not a character. We are not a stereotype.

If you want to celebrate the cultures that practice the use of the warbonnet then why not read works written by people from those cultures? Why not study their culture’s history? Why do you think that image does anything to celebrate those cultures? It is an illustration. It does nothing to celebrate those cultures. These cultures do not exist for your benefit. The warbonnet does not exist so you can use it’s likeness to make you look more spiritual/wild/free/etc. You really want to celebrate these cultures? Then respect those who are telling you to back off.

people often ask me why i am so distant, and take so long to make friends, but then i want to have them see my flash back of meeting this white girl in my English class and we were slowly getting to know each other. We went to Walmart and she pointed at a Black baby and said “look at the cute n*glet”. I called her on her shit and she was so shocked, “what i said cute not ugly!”. I never hung out with her again but she was still on my facebook and she posted about how she will always call out racism no matter who it is..  I don’t put my label of “friend” on just anybody. They have to be idk an actual good person.
