i think you gave that mixed race anon some really harmful advice. i would suggest instead they go over to the blog weareallmixedup for people who have gone through this and have trouble with identification. you assume they are white passing but anon never said anything about that. i think you marginalized some very real feelings mixed race people have, because they present as poc oftentimes in a white world but the whole 'you should brush it off' attitude perpetuates bad self-image usually.

Would you say leather fringe is appropriation? I saw this leather vest with a very long fringe and was just wondering if that's not ok for me to wear because I'm white?

Fringe can be appropriated if you wear it as a costume you piece. But if you aren’t wearing it to look “Indian” then I think it is fine.
Back home in North Carolina I was called a half breed and it literally broke my heart because it make me feel like I wasn't important to my tribe or my people...

Have you tried talking to other mixed race or biracial people about these feelings? It may be beneficial to understand that you aren’t alone and foster feelings of self acceptance.
Understanding their (those who aren’t accepting you) point of views might be helpful too. Understanding that Native peoples are exploited, abused, and disrespected (to say the least), which may make it that much more difficult to trust everyone, especially if that someone is white passing. I don’t know if you are white passing, but if you are that may be a contributing factor. What I am trying to say is ‘respect is earned’; be patient, be respectful, and accept yourself. Good luck <3
I was talking to this guy in the UK and he was like "be my Indian princess" and I was so confused and was like "you know I'm Native American not Indian right" and he said "bitch your Indian now send me photos of that sexy Indian body" I stopped talking to him. I can't believe people think we are some kinda of sex object because history classes lied about what happened to our people (I say our people because I know every tribe is different but we have to stand as one to get through to people)

AlterNATIVE Education
Hey, guys! A couple of my friends at my university really need your help! They are a group of Native (mostly women) students who are trying to spread decolonized education (woooohoooo!!!!) to Native high schoolers on reservations and in New Mexico. It would really help
them out if you could donate something or signal boost this. They are not getting paid, but they need money to travel to the students. Any donation at all is helpful! Here is what they have to say:
WHO ARE WE?
AlterNATIVE Education is an education-focused non-profit that works with Native American/American Indian students to teach them about the left out history of American Indians. Our facilitators are composed entirely of Columbia University students, the majority being of American Indian descent.
WHAT WE DO
AlterNATIVE Education is a peer-education and mentorship initiative that will ENGAGE students with Native histories, Native governments, Na-tive arts and Native current events, which are topics that are not talked about often enough in the classroom; EMPOWER Native students as community members, as individuals, as agents of change; and finally, ENCOURAGE Native students to seriously consider pursuing higher education through long-term mentorship. AlterNATIVE’s ultimate goal is to have 100% of AlterNATIVE mentees graduate from high school and apply to college.SUMMER 2014
This summer, alterNATIVE education is expanding, going from four sites to six. This summer, our alterNATIVE education facilitators will be at:

In this Native-directed, -produced, and -starring movie, three contemporary, urban, indigenous sisters, Vickie (Valerie Red-Horse), Karen (Kimberly Norris Guerrero), and Tanya (Irene Bedard), face an uphill battle when they open their own business selling homegrown cosmetics under the name “Naturally Native,” encountering racist, patronizing attitudes along the way. Functioning as (director, writer, and actor) Red-Horse’s commentary on her fight with the movie industry to get Native-centered films, including her own, made, Naturally Native is the first film by, about, and fully financed by Native Americans, with all production monies being supplied by the Mashantucket Pequot Nation.
is braiding my hair a cultural appropriation ?
Asked by Anonymous
No. Unless you braid your hair and say “look I am an Indian now!” and/or use braids to dress up as another race or culture.
This may not be true about all types of braiding, and may only be true about the two braids parted down the middle.
What is your opinion on gay marriage?
Asked by Anonymous
I support the right for same sex couples to get married.
I think that anon meant that you were on that list of supposed "fake" natives and that maybe you should delete and get out of a community that harbors so much hate.

Oh, maybe. Thanks for trying to clarify that message. I do not condone every action that has been made, but I do respect people’s space and their rights to feel whatever way they want in regards to me.

This will tell legislators in your state that you oppose raising Shasta Dam.
California congressional representatives (Democrats and Republicans) are lining up to ram through federal legislation to raise Shasta Dam and guarantee low cost water to Central Valley water brokers for big profits.
The Winnemem Wintu of the McCloud River have paid once already, losing our lands, our river and our salmon. We received no compensation when the dam flooded us out, and then were told we’re not Indians any more.A higher dam will drown more of our ceremonial sites, including the grounds of our Balas Chonas (Coming of Age ceremony), which make us who we are.

tumblr will find a way to be offended about anything
it’s breeding a generation of people who need to be coddled and protected from life, growing up believing that everyone should hold up a metaphorical sign saying ‘TRIGGER WARNING’ before anything that might be considered offensive (everything)
FINALLY SOMEONE SAID IT
I hate when people say “put a trigger warning.” This statement is so accurate!
Yes!!!
So it bothers you because people actively try to make tumblr a safe space for oppressed or marginalized people or people who get easily triggered by things because they suffer from something. When they go out in the real world don’t nobody give a fuck about them. And you mad because they can come to tumblr for solace. Ok
