Apparently it’s okay to be hateful towards cis, heterosexual, and white people because queer people are slaughtered every day. My mistake. I was under the illusion that everyone was equal and so should be treated so regardless of what’s going on in other parts of…

It was sarcasm. I’m well aware of the lack of equality. But no. If you want to apply that logic it should be completely fine that I hate trans people, because once I was told I’m faking my gender for attention by one trans person. Once a bottle was thrown at my face -it missed- by a complete stranger because of the way I looked, so I should hate all middle aged men. I should hate all mothers because my mother once told me that I’m going through a stupid phase and I can’t change how I was born. I should hate many people because of my oppression but I don’t. You cannot overcome oppression without forgiveness. You cannot fight hatred with hatred. We will never solve anything that way.

Individual acts of prejudice or cruelty does not mean that all the people who have been cruel to you have an oppressive power over you. White, cis het people do hold a position of power, and are the oppressive power. Forgiving an oppressor never made the oppressor kinder or less oppressive. Saying that hating one’s oppressor is fighting hate with hate sounds like shaming a victim, as if the victim is just as much to blame because they hated their abuser. Hating someone(s) who deliberately hurt you is not being petty, or just as bad.

I was under the illusion that everyone was equal and so should be treated so regardless of what’s going on in other parts of the world. Time to start hating all my cis het friends.

I am glad you recognized that it is an illusion; the belief that all people are treated equally is not reality. how can you blame someone for hating their oppressors, their abusers?

I am so done with “all white people are privileged”. If you don’t like my skin color then stop being my friend or have enough courtesy to respect my feelings jesus fuck.

recognizing white people have white privilege* does not equal hating white people’s skin colors. the way white people look is not what is hated, the undeserved entitlements and unfair privileges and benefits is what is hated.

Completed the Cherokee Nation History Course by Julia Coates; it was very informative and beneficial to discuss known and unknown topics. However, the completion of this class does not make me an expert in any sense of the term, but I am still grateful for having this experience.

I was walking to the market and I twisted my ankle and fell; now my foot is swollen and in pain, and although this is a typical occurrence (because my right leg has healed the wrong way) it is very unfortunate because I teach fancy shawl and jingle dance class every other Tuesday, which includes today, and it is our last class before the next powwow where they all hope to dance. So this practice is very important and I got injured. I feel like a failure.

Just finished with our second biggest event of the year, here at the American Indian Education Program; the event was teaching California Native crafts, storytelling, and history (on a very small and short scale!). Over 800 children from local schools showed up. The station I was teaching had over 150 students and, remarkably enough, nearly everyone finished their craft. I am so happy with how this event went, from what I could tell, most kids enjoyed it. So proud of all the native parents and grandparents who took time out of their schedules to teach.

Sacred Water Protection: Moccasins on the Ground Unified Messaging

Last weekend Lakota and allies came together from the 4 directions in Oglala Nation to participate in a Moccasins on the Ground non-violent direct action training camp. Moccasins on the Ground is led by Owe Aku International, an organization dedicated to bringing back the Lakota worldview and way of life. Land defenders from Wet’suwet’en and Secwepemc First Nations in so-called British Colombia, Black Hills Clean Water Alliance, Tar Sands Blockade in Texas, Common Stream in Boston, and many more people from diverse walks of life convened in the beautiful Red Shirt Homelands on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. “Our prayers have been answered,” said one elder from Red Shirt.

Moccasins on the Ground occurred the same weekend as the Cowboy and Indian Alliance encampment in Washington D.C. With all due respect to the relatives who traveled to the nation’s capitol voicing opposition to the KXL pipeline, Owe Aku International is focused on protecting the homelands. “Why go to Washington D.C. to protest the KXL pipeline, when Congress isn’t even in session and our homelands are under attack?” asked Oglala Lakota spiritual leader Victorio Camp.

Red Shirt, South Dakota is located on the banks of the White River, downstream from the Crow Butte uranium mine in Nebraska, which is owned and operated by the Canadian company Cameco. When folks drive across the bridge into Red Shirt, they see a sign that says “WARNING: RADIOACTIVE.” While Red Shirt is the community most affected by uranium mining on Pine Ridge, all wells on the reservation have been tainted with radiation poisoning. While many Lakota stand united against the KXL pipeline, the Oglala Lakota Nation relies on the Mni Wicozani water pipeline for clean drinking water. Mni Wicozani means “Water is Life,” and that is the message Owe Aku International continues to share with the world.
